Marvis Williams Obituary

Marvis LaVerne Williams was born in Wendall, NC to Hugh Marrow, Sr. and Charlotte Webb, on June 6, 1930.  She moved to Newark, NJ in 1952.  It was in NJ, where she met and married Eugene Williams in 1962.  The couple resided in Hackensack, NJ.

Marvis accepted Christ at an early age in her life.  She was an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Hackensack, NJ for over 60 years.  She was committed to the work of ministry, becoming involved in many organizations.  She was Pastoral Assistant to three different pastors: Pastor Cowel, Pastor Osborne and Pastor Curry.  She was a member of the Cathedral Choir, Willing Workers, Widow Workers and a member of the Silver Angels Club.  She was also a Sunday School Teacher, and staff member of Big Heart Christian Academy, where she taught for many years.  She was also involved with basketball and softball and made a fine Spades partner

Marvis had developed a special “sister-bond” with Katie B. Marrow, so, in 2018 she transitioned from NJ to Portsmouth, VA to be with Katie and the family.  In 2019, she expressed her desire to be a fully fellowshipped member of Abundant Life Ministries.  Her greatest joy was prayer, praise, and the Word!

She departed this life on January 25, 2021 at 12:30 a.m. with Gwen by her side.  She was preceded in death by her father, mother and 5 siblings: Hugh Jr., Gladys, Carl, James, and Doris. She leaves to morn, a daughter, Eugenia Carroll; 4 grandchildren: Tonnisha Crawford, Brian Williams, Chanel Carroll, and Darrell Carroll; 12 grandchildren; 8 nieces and nephews: Gwen Marrow (Kenneth), Carl Marrow, Kathlyn Hunter, Michael Marrow (Sarah), and Thomas Marrow (Barbara), Carl Erving (Darcel), Wayne Marrow (Reba), and Trudy Marrow

Marvis was dedicated to her calling and loved by many.  She was dedicated and faithful to those she loved - always supportive, humble, and full of laughter.  We will miss her uplifting personality and being in her presence.
