She was predeceased by her son, Alphonzo Hawkins and her brothers, Pete Hawkins, Will Hawkins, Williams Hawkins, Jesse Hawkins and Estes Hawkins. She was also predeceased by her sisters Florence Hawkins and Helen Hawkins and her niece Edna Hines and nephew Charles Hopkins.
Mae was born in Halifax County North Carolina, She was noted as a loving, kind, compassionate and friendly woman. She loved people and showed it through the help she gave to many. The lasting memories she made are a wonderful legacy to this great woman. Her charity began at home as she was a mother and father to her own children. She taught them sound principles and overall knowledge about life and humanity. As we celebrate her life , there are many chapters which tell the story of this woman who treated people with respect and care. She had "mother wit". She reached out to many through just taking time to listen and cook and share meals with love.
Mae did domestic work. She also worked in and retired from the Cork Factory on Indian River Road in Norfolk Va. Mae followed our grandmother who taught her "human knowledge". She passed these values and knowledge onto her children. She trained them in Godly values and how to grow and flourish and stick together as family. She provided comfort and nurturing to as many as she could.
Mae became a worshipper with New Bethel Cathedral COGIC. Pastor Austin loved her and Mother Mae respected and loved him. The NBC Family loved her and will remember her smile ass she received prayer at the altar. Her bright smile and easy manner brought joy to the sanctuary and church family. We were honored to pray for Mother Mae and the Hawkins family.
She leaves to cherish her memory with love, her, son, Willie Hawkins, Spanaway, WA; daughter in law, Pastor Jacqueline Hawkins, Newport News, VA; daughter, Frances Knight, Hampton VA, sisters-in-law, Rachel Hawkins, Endfield, NC; Ruth Hawkins. Norfolk, VA; nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several great great- grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.
