Joseph Matthew Burwell, Jr. the son of the late Revered Joseph Matthew Burwell, Sr. and the late Mabel Bullock Burwell, was born on August 13, 1942 in Henderson, North Carolina. He went to be with the Lord on August 22, 2019.
Joseph attended Dabney and Eaton Johnson Elementary schools in Henderson, North Carolina. Upon the family moving to Norfolk, Virginia, he attended and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from Norfolk State University. Joseph worked as an Accountant for the Federal Government for a short period, then moved into private business as a building contractor. Joseph accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and was baptized and became a member of Cary Congregational Christian Church later known as the Cary United Church of Christ. Joseph was an avid football fan, and was devoted to the Washington Redskins. He was God’s special gift to us as he was always ready and willing to assist family and friends in whatever way he could. He faced many challenges in life, however, he never gave up and never gave in as evidenced in his triumphant spirit and mighty warrior strength. The hole which he leaves in our hearts will never be filled.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory: Sister Shirley B. West, Brother, Richard H. Burwell and Sister in Law, Kanata R. Burwell, Brother in Law, Lawrence Tucker. Nieces: Deborah R. West, Laura V. Tucker, Cora Burwell, Tyren Burwell and Alyssa Burwell. Nephews: Richard R. Burwell II, Richard A. Burwell III and Elijah J. Brown; Devoted friends Reverend Walker, Tony Black and Jerome Gardner.
