On April 30, 2019, Harry D. Powell Jr. transitioned into eternal rest. Born in Southampton County Virginia on October 11, 1928, Harry was married to the late Ethel Virginia Williams Powell of Capron Virginia for sixty-eight years, and in that union they had eight children (two deceased), twelve grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Harry is also survived by four siblings.
The capstone of his professional career included almost forty years of federal civilian service with the United States Navy, where he received numerous accolades for outstanding performance.
Harry’s service to mankind is unparalleled, serving as a Commissioner with the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority, as a Deacon with Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Norfolk, and as a Notary Public with the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was also the Past President of the Sunrise Hills Civic League with a combined tenure of almost fifty years. During his time as President, Harry was the catalyst that helped to bring the Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Community Center, and the Thurgood Marshall Elementary School (which he named), to the South Norfolk area. He was the Past President of Chesapeake Men for Progress, and has served on numerous committees throughout the City of Chesapeake, speaking truth to power, always advocating for the underprivileged and underserved in this community.
Through the grace that God had given him, Harry leaves a legacy as a titan in the City of Chesapeake, with faithful and unwavering service to God, to this nation, and to this world.
Harry's viewing is Friday at Fitchett Funeral Home from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
His Life Celebration is Saturday, 11:am at Mt Lebanon Baptist Church, 1141 Campostella Rd. Norfolk, Va. Pastor Bobby Bowser officiating.
