Betty Louise Crummie

Ms. Betty Louise Crummie of 2700 Townhouse Lane, Chesapeake, Virginia, beloved daughter of the late Edwin Norman and Doris Bush Crummie passed away on June 6, 2017 from acute coronary insufficiency.

Betty was born on January 15, 1963. Named after her aunt Betty she entered the world with much exuberance, much like she lived the next 54 years of her life. Betty accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and enjoyed early nurturing in the Christian faith at Rock Creek Baptist Church.

Betty attended Clark Elementary, MacFarland Junior High, Anna Burdick and Theodore Roosevelt Senior High Schools. At Burdick she supported the athletic programs as a cheerleader. She excelled academically at Roosevelt and landed summer jobs with Blue Cross Blue Shield and the National Institutes of Health. Betty enjoyed music, dance, theatre and the arts. One of her favorite hobbies as teenager was roller skating with friends at the Kalorama Roller Rink in Northwest, DC. Betty enjoyed a rich upbringing having cultivated meaningful friendships that she enjoyed throughout her lifetime. She matured quickly as a young lady taking on many household responsibilities assisting her mom and older sister Vicki. She would often prepare dinner for the entire family as a teenager.

After graduating from Roosevelt High Betty enrolled in Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia where she majored in Business Administration. She was employed back in the DC area during the summers of her freshman and sophomore years with Acacia Insurance Company on Capitol Hill. As her junior year was about to begin, Acacia was so impressed with her performance they offered her an opportunity she simply could not refuse. Postponing her final two years of college, she took a lead position with Acacia.

She relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia in 2001 and accepted a job with the City of Portsmouth in their Department of Economic Development. Betty was a stellar Administrative Coordinator who served the City of Portsmouth with diligence and dedication for 16 years. Her co-workers remember her for her energy, her excellent work ethic, her enthusiasm and her bright smile that would light up the office. Betty enjoyed spending time with family and friends and frequently made the drive from Portsmouth to Washington on weekends to do so. She will be missed by many close friends in the DMV (too many to name). She also enjoyed several close friends in Portsmouth including a dear friendship with Reginald Stukes and a close friendship with Lee Ogelby. Betty loved her family and never hesitated to go to any length to create new and precious memories with them.

She leaves behind to cherish those memories one sister Evangeline Vicki (Sonny); three brothers, Charles Thomas, Edwin Norman and Robert Wayne (Carla); two aunts, Betty Harps and Ernestine Jones; ten cousins, Ronnie, Yvette, Horace, Ricky, Willie, Karen, Blanche, James, Gary and Sonja, two nieces Natasha and Meagan and two nephews Edwin III and Robert II; and a host of other cousins, great nieces and nephews and of course many friends and acquaintances

A memorial service of celebration honoring the life of Betty will be held on Thursday, June 22 at 11 am at Mount Sinai Baptist Church - 1615 3rd Street, Northwest, Washington, DC 20001.
