Bettie Gloria Boyd

Mrs. Bettie Gloria Boyd passed on Thursday, December 28, 2017 in her home with her family by her side. She was married for over 50 years to her loving husband Frederick E. Boyd Sr.

Bettie S. Boyd was born November 13, 1936 to George Earl and Mildred J. Stokes (Joynes). Bettie was raised in Norfolk, Virginia. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. Bettie committed her life to Jesus Christ at an early age and served in her home church, Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk. Bettie was educated at Saint Joseph Catholic School, Norfolk Public Schools, Le Moyne College( Memphis, TN), Norfolk State College(University) and Old Dominion University. Bettie was an inactive member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was employed by the Norfolk Public Schools for nearly 32 years as an elementary school teacher and a communication skills and reading specialist.

She is preceded in death by a daughter Joy Hope, parents George Earl and Mildred Stokes, and a brother George Earl Stokes Jr., grandparents Harry and Eva Joynes.

Many remain to cherish her memory including her husband Frederick, Sr., son Frederick, Jr. (Nicole), grandchildren Brock and Cameron, Aunt Sylvia Lawton & other relatives and friends.

The family extends thanks to colleagues and students who expressed appreciation for Bettie over the years and her team of care-givers for their service during her illness: Charlene, Stacy and Stephanie. 

A public viewing was held at Fitchett Funeral Home on. Wed. Jan. 3 from 4 - 7pm. Her funeral services have been rescheduled for Friday, January 12th,  11:00 am at Mt Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, 1057 Kennedy St. Norfolk, Va.
