Mary Eliza Chesson

Mary Eliza Chesson was born to the late Lizzie P. Lucas and Hyman Lucas on June 10, 1924 in Mackeys, North Carolina. Mary or Bittie, as most knew her was the youngest of five siblings; four girls and one boy.

Mary was married to the late Elmer Chesson and moved to Roper, North Carolina, where they had their children. Mary worked in the cotton and tobacco fields, cleaning and cooking in homes and nursing homes in her community. Eventually, Mary moved her family to Norfolk, Virginia, where she would spend the rest of her life.

Mary was best known for her beautiful legs, her will power to say whatever was on her mind, and being the best cook on her block. She also loved to dance. Mary was a kind woman who never turned anyone away. Most of all, she made sure to take her faith in the Lord everywhere she went and she loved her family.

Mary is predeceased by her husband, Elmer Chesson; her son, Bobby Chesson; four sisters, one brother, and two daughters-in-law, Brenda and Jackie Chesson.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her only daughter, Mary Knight; four sons, Elmer Jr. (Barbara), James (Rosa), Russell, and Thomas (Deborah). Mary also leaves 18 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends she held dear to her heart.

In the words of Mary “Bittie” Chesson, “Take God everywhere you go.” We will always love you Bittie and you will remain in our hearts forever!

Ms. Chesson will lie in state Wednesday, May 17 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Fitchett Funeral Home, Liberty Street.

Homegoing Service will be Thursday, May 18 at 12 pm at Fitchett Funeral Home, Liberty Street.
