By His divine providence, God sent His angels into our midst to call home the spirit of our beloved, Lloyd Curtis Futrell Sr. He entered into eternal rest on May 26 surrounded by his loving family. Lloyd, affectionately known as, Curtis was one of five children born to the union of the late Lazarus and Fannie Mae Futrell. He was born in Norfolk on September 1, 1942.
Curtis matriculated through the Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
Even as a young boy, Curtis always had a love for music. After graduating from high school, he founded the Curtis Gospel Singers. The Curtis Gospel Singers soon became very famous throughout the Hampton Roads area as they traveled around to sing. Curtis quickly built a strong reputation based on his love for God and Gospel music, which led to him becoming very well-known and loved.
Curtis served as a Minister of Music, singer, and musician for several churches and nursing homes for over 30 years. Faith Deliverance COGIC, New Hope Baptist Church, Faith Temple COGIC, Freedom COGIC,Little Zion Baptist Church-Bowers Hill, New Bethel COGIC, Macedonia Pentecostal Church, Golden Living Center Nursing Home, and Lake Taylor Nursing Home are only a few places that Curtis touched lives and inspired people with his music.
Not only was he musically inclined, but Curtis was known as a hard worker. He held several jobs throughout his life including assisting the elderly at Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia and a supervisor at SPSA. Curtis was loving, generous, and will be missed greatly by all that knew him!
He was predeceased by his parents and one sister, Trudy Ann Futrell.
Curtis leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Lloyd Curtis Futrell Jr. (Towanda); four grandchildren, Laquan Lawrence, Ty'Quira Rogers, Ty'Eisha Rogers, and Tani'Ja Futrell; two great-grandchildren, X'Zavion Futrell and My'Asia Edwards; one brother, Monecure Futrell; two sisters, Shirley Dickerson (Leverne) and Doris Jean Gales (Howard), and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones.
Mr. Futrell will lie in state Friday, June 3 from 12 pm to 7 pm at Fitchett Funeral Home, Liberty Street
Homegoing Service will be Saturday, June 4 at 12 pm at Mount Carmel Baptist Church - 1100 Church Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23510.
