Ethel Virginia Powell

Mrs. Ethel Virginia Powell peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Sentara Oak Grove Nursing Facility in Chesapeake, Virginia. Ethel was born October 2, 1931 and was one of twelve children born to the late Reverend John Elliot Williams and Littie Mae Jones Williams.

Ethel was a native of Capron, Virginia (Southampton County). She was also predeceased by two brothers: Purnell Williams & Charles Williams; and three sisters: Lena W. Smith, Bessie W. Walker, & Adelaide Williams Rice.

At a young age, she joined Morning Star Baptist Church - Capron, Virginia, which at the time was under the pastorate of her father. Later in 1947, she married Harry D. Powell Jr., and from this union of sixty-eight years, six children were born: William, Beatrice, Quency, Dwight, Martin, Charles; also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church West Munden for many years and served in the capacity of Trustee. Because of her love for Christ, her devotion to her husband and family, and her commitment to the community, she was honored as "Mother of the Year" by the City of Chesapeake in 1998.

Her legacy of Christian service, generosity, kindness, fortitude and love will live on forever. She fought the good fight of faith, and now she will receive her great reward in Heaven.

Viewing/Visitation will be Wed. Oct. 28 from 12-7pm at Fitchett Funeral Home, Liberty Street.

Homegoing Services will be Thurs. Oct. 29 at 11 am at First Baptist Church - West Munden.
